Uluwatu is one of the most famous surf destinations in the world. But is Uluwatu good for beginners? The short answer is that the main breaks aren’t, but Uluwatu can still be a great base for learning, if you take lessons with a local school.
Why Uluwatu’s famous waves aren’t for beginners
Breaks like Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin and Impossibles break over shallow coral reef. They can be powerful and fast, and getting in and out of the water can be tricky. Falling on a reef at low tide can cause injuries, and the line-ups are crowded with experienced surfers.
Where beginners can learn near Uluwatu
Local surf schools on the Bukit Peninsula know where the gentler waves are. On small days, they may use softer spots nearby. On bigger days, many will drive beginners to the sandy beach breaks of Kuta or Canggu. Ask your school where lessons take place and whether transport is included.
Why stay in Uluwatu as a beginner?
- Stunning clifftop scenery and sunsets.
