Packing for your first surf trip to Bali? You don’t need much: the water is warm and surf schools provide boards. But a few essentials will keep you comfortable, protected from the sun and ready for the waves.
Surf essentials
- Rash vest or surf top – protects you from sunburn and board rash. Schools often provide one, but your own fits better.
- Reef-safe sunscreen and zinc – the equatorial sun is strong. Zinc stays on your face in the water.
- Swimwear that stays put – sporty swimwear or boardshorts are best for surfing.
- Reef boots – useful if you’ll surf reef breaks like Uluwatu or Nusa Lembongan. Not usually needed on sandy beaches like Kuta.
- Surf hat or cap – for sun protection between sessions.
- Earplugs – if you’re prone to ear problems.
First aid kit
- Antiseptic and plasters for coral cuts and scrapes, which can get infected in the tropics.
- After-sun or aloe vera.
- Any personal medication, plus rehydration sachets.
Everyday items
- A quick-dry towel and a dry bag for your phone and keys.
- Light, breathable clothes, flip-flops and a light rain jacket for the wet season.
- Insect repellent.
- A reusable water bottle.
Documents and money
- Passport and any visa paperwork. Check the latest entry requirements before you travel.
- Travel insurance that covers surfing. Not all policies do, so check the small print.
- Some cash in Indonesian rupiah, as smaller surf schools and warungs may prefer cash.
What you can leave at home
- A wetsuit – Bali’s water is warm all year.
- A surfboard – beginners use soft-top boards provided by schools, and board hire is easy to find.
Bringing your own board?
If you’re an experienced surfer, a padded board bag is essential and you should check your airline’s surfboard fees. Many surfers rent boards locally instead.
