Uluwatu is Bali’s surf capital, a clifftop stretch of the Bukit Peninsula with world-famous reef breaks, sunset beach bars and some of the island’s best surf camps. A surf camp bundles your accommodation, daily coaching, transport to the waves and often meals and video analysis into one package. That makes it one of the fastest ways to improve, whether it’s your first week on a board or you’re working towards the reefs.
This guide explains how Uluwatu surf camps work, who they suit, and how to choose one. It also lists the camps in our directory. If you just want to compare prices and dates, you can browse Uluwatu and Bali surf camps on BookSurfCamps.
Is Uluwatu a good place for a surf camp?
Yes, especially for improvers and intermediates. The headline waves of Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Bingin and Impossibles break over shallow reef and suit experienced surfers. But camps here know the area well. They take beginners to softer spots on small days, or drive to the beach breaks of Kuta and Canggu when the swell is big. As you progress, your coaches can guide you onto easier reef sections at the right tide, which is hard to do safely on your own.
When is the best time for an Uluwatu surf camp?
The dry season, roughly April to October, is Uluwatu’s prime time. South-east trade winds blow offshore along the Bukit and Indian Ocean swells are at their most consistent. It’s also the busiest and most expensive period, so book early for July and August. In the wet season (about November to March) the Bukit’s west side is often onshore, and many camps then run sessions on Bali’s east coast instead. Wet season can be good value and quieter.
What’s usually included?
- Accommodation – shared dorms, private rooms or villas, often with a pool.
- Daily surf sessions – usually one or two guided sessions a day, with transport to the best spot for conditions.
- Coaching and video analysis – many camps film your session and review it with you in the evening, which speeds up progress a lot.
- Theory and extras – surf etiquette, reading tides and swell, plus yoga or fitness classes at some camps.
- Meals – breakfast is common; some camps include more.
Always check exactly what’s included, as packages vary a lot between camps.

How to choose the right Uluwatu surf camp
- Match your level. Ask whether the camp groups surfers by ability and where beginners actually surf.
- Coach-to-student ratio. Smaller groups mean more feedback in the water.
- Video analysis. If you want to improve fast, choose a camp that films and reviews sessions.
- Location and transport. The Bukit is spread out and hilly. Check how far the camp is from the breaks and whether transfers are included.
- Vibe. Some camps are social with shared dorms; others are quieter with private rooms. Read recent reviews.
Surf camp or surf lessons?
If you only have a day or two, a few individual lessons or a bookable surf lesson is simpler and cheaper. If you have a week or more and want to really progress, a surf camp is usually better value, because coaching, transport and accommodation are all handled for you.
