Learning to surf in Kuta
Kuta Beach has a long, sandy beach break and a huge choice of schools, so it’s very forgiving for your first lesson. It’s just minutes from the airport, which makes it ideal if you only have a day or two. Downsides: it’s busy, and rip currents form on bigger days, so learn with a school and stay between the lifeguard flags.
Learning to surf in Canggu
Canggu is famous for Batu Bolong, a gentle wave that’s perfect for beginners and longboarders. It has a relaxed surf-town feel, lots of places to eat and stay, and plenty of other surfers to learn from. It’s further from the airport and traffic can be slow, but many people fall in love with the lifestyle.
Which is better for beginners?
- Choose Kuta if you’re a complete beginner on a short trip, want the easiest logistics, or are staying in Kuta, Legian or Seminyak.
- Choose Canggu if you’re staying a week or more, want a surf-town atmosphere, or plan to keep surfing after your lessons.
Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either. The quality of your instructor matters more than the beach.
What about Legian and Seminyak?
Legian shares Kuta’s beach and is a little calmer. Seminyak has stronger beach breaks and is better for improvers.
