Bali has waves all year round, which is one reason it’s such a popular place to learn to surf. But the best time to surf in Bali depends on the season and which side of the island you’re on. Here’s what beginners need to know.
Bali’s two surf seasons
Dry season: roughly April to October
This is Bali’s main surf season. South-east trade winds blow offshore on the west and south coasts, so spots like Kuta, Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu are at their best. Swells are often biggest in the middle of the year, which is great for experienced surfers. Beginners should stick to lessons with a school, which will pick a suitable spot.
Wet season: roughly November to March
Winds swing around, so the east coast, including Sanur, Nusa Dua and Keramas, tends to be offshore. There are usually fewer tourists, and beginner lessons still run on the west coast on smaller, cleaner days. Expect tropical rain showers, often in the afternoon.
Best time for beginners
Many surfers rate the shoulder months, around April–May and September–October, as a sweet spot. There’s usually good surf, fewer crowds than peak summer, and more settled weather. That said, beginners can learn in Bali at any time of year, because schools move to whichever beaches have the friendliest conditions.
Best time of day
Early mornings are usually best. The wind is lighter, the water is smoother, and it’s cooler and less crowded. On the west coast, the wind often picks up later in the day.
Water temperature
Bali’s water is warm all year, so you won’t need a wetsuit. A rash vest protects you from the sun and board rash.
Quick guide: where to surf by season
| Season | Best coast | Beginner-friendly areas |
|---|---|---|
| Dry (Apr–Oct) | West and south | Kuta, Legian, Canggu |
| Wet (Nov–Mar) | East (plus small west-coast days) | Sanur-based schools, plus Kuta on small days |
Plan your trip
Whatever month you visit, a local school will know where the waves are best. Browse surf schools by area, read how much surf lessons cost, or compare Bali surf camps for a week of coaching.
